I have always wanted to learn how to draw, but I have had trouble knowing where to start. I first discovered Kawaii art from seeing PicCandle’s videos on Youtube. From watching her videos I was inspired to learn how to draw in this style. So I came across the How to Draw Kawaii course by Tatyana Deniz. She has kindly given me the course in exchange for an honest review.

This course is self-paced so you can go take the course as fast or as slow as you want. The course is printable so you can create your own workbook for the course.

For myself, I didn’t print out the lessons instead I drew out everything in my sketchbook. This gave me more practice in drawing and also allowed me to use different drawing materials.

Here is what I used for this course and just some of my favorite drawing supplies in general:

iPad Mini 2*

Meko Universal Stylus*

Micron Pens*

Adobe Draw

Procreate iPad App

Adobe Photoshop CS3

Tatyana does guide you step by step in drawing Kawaii. The course starts out with drawing faces and expressions. Here is an example of what I drew for that lesson.

My overall favorite lesson I would say is a tie between the Faces and Expressions and also Decorating Characters with Texture. I feel like these two lessons alone really made my drawings more unique and stand out. Here is an example of what I did for the Decorating Characters with Texture lesson. I copied the illustrations from the lesson into my notebook then I used the free Adobe draw app on my iPad to trace the drawing and color it in.

Since the course is self-paced I was able to complete the course when I have the time. There are no videos for the course and I do wish there were some. For me at least it’s easier to draw when I am shown through a video.

Overall I did really enjoy the course and I will be going back to take it again and again. I am able to get endless amounts of ideas and inspiration. Here’s a link to the course where there is so much more information: https://howtodrawkawaii.com/

Also, Tatyana has a website which has even more amazing kawaii drawing tutorials and inspiration: https://tatyanadeniz.com/

  1. Thank you for this wonderful review, Kirsten! And thank you for following along with the course. There is nothing more meaningful to me than seeing what people create using the lessons. You did a beautiful job with the characters and the colours. I love it!
Good point about video, hehe. I plan to add video lessons to the course very soon. 🙂 Happy drawing!!
